Monitor Arms and Mounts Explained: Build a Healthier, Tidier Desk

A monitor arm frees up desk space, tidies your cables and lets you position your screen exactly where it is most comfortable. Here is what to check before you buy.

1. Check the VESA pattern

Most monitors and TVs have four threaded holes on the back in a standard VESA pattern. The most common monitor sizes are 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm; larger screens and TVs use bigger patterns. Make sure the mount supports your screen's pattern.

2. Match the weight and screen size

Every arm has a supported weight range and maximum screen size. Gas-spring arms in particular need your monitor's weight to fall within the range so the screen stays where you put it. Check the weight of the screen without its stand.

3. Choose how it attaches

  • Desk clamp — fixes to the edge of the desk, no drilling needed.
  • Grommet mount — goes through a cable hole for a very clean, stable fitting.
  • Freestanding base — no installation, easy to move.
  • Wall mount — ideal for TVs, meeting rooms and digital signage.

4. Single, dual or triple?

Dual and triple arms keep multiple screens aligned at the same height, which makes multi-monitor setups much more comfortable for trading, design and coding.

5. Set it up ergonomically

  • Place the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level.
  • Keep the screen about an arm's length away.
  • Tilt the screen slightly back to reduce glare and neck strain.

Many arms include built-in cable management to route power and display cables neatly along the arm.
